Eng. Hossam Sobhy, Chairman of ICE Group:
“We specialize in corrosion protection consulting for oil, gas and energy facilities and are working to extend their service life and maximize their value”
A career spanning major entities and companies across several countries has culminated in the establishment of a group with six companies and branches in Egypt and abroad. With more than 25 years of operations in Egypt, Eng. Hossam Sobhy, Chairman of ICE Group, has built an impressive track record in the oil, gas, energy and insulation sectors, achieving milestones that have positioned the group as a specialized player in the field of asset integrity and infrastructure protection.
Eng. Hossam Sobhy said that his professional experience extends across a number of companies specializing in the oil and insulation sectors. He explained that he began his career in the United Kingdom, working for John Brown, an engineering company that was once a global leader in refinery design.
He subsequently joined Emile Arouette in Egypt as a Materials and Engineering Engineer, before moving to an American company and later joining Shell in the United Kingdom, where Shell’s global headquarters is located. There, he was responsible for asset integrity and safety across a number of countries.
He later joined the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) through one of its gas and offshore gas-production entities, before eventually taking over the leadership of his own group.
Sobhy explained that ICE is not a single entity but rather a group comprising six companies. Two are headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; two are based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; one is located in the Sultanate of Oman; in addition to two offices in Cairo, Egypt.
He noted that the group’s core activities focus on specialized consulting services designed to protect oil, gas and energy facilities from corrosion and other factors that could threaten their integrity. The ultimate goal, he said, is to ensure the sustainability of these assets, extend their service life, maximize their utilization and enhance their profitability.
He explained that the group works to bring the latest international technologies and practices in asset preservation to Egypt by assessing facilities and the risks to which they are exposed, then developing solutions that enable them to achieve, and potentially exceed, their intended service life in an economically efficient manner.
“This approach helps maximize profitability while minimizing the risk of sudden failures and unexpected shutdowns,” he said.
Sobhy emphasized that the state invests heavily in infrastructure development, making it equally important to protect and preserve these investments through the application of the latest scientific and technological methods for asset assessment, maintenance and sustainability.
Cathodic protection and infrastructure preservation
He highlighted cathodic protection as one of the group’s key areas of activity. The technology is used to protect oil, gas and water pipelines, irrigation networks and other infrastructure against internal and external corrosion.
He revealed that ICE currently owns the only specialized factory of its kind in Egypt dedicated to this field, serving the petroleum and gas sectors as well as other energy-related industries, irrigation and water projects.
The factory also produces products for export to international markets, he added.
Digital transformation and the “Digital Twin”
Sobhy explained that another major area of ICE’s business is digital transformation, particularly the digitization of engineering documents related to industrial facilities and their continuous updating to reflect modifications made during operation and maintenance.
He pointed to the group’s project with Alexandria National Refining and Petrochemicals Company (ANRPC), commonly known as ANRBK, which has been underway for approximately three years or more.
The project includes the creation of what is known as a “Digital Twin” of the facilities, allowing engineering documentation to remain synchronized with the actual condition and configuration of the plant.
He explained that refineries are constantly subject to modifications due to changes in crude oil types, operating conditions and production requirements. Consequently, engineering documentation must be continuously updated in digital form so that it does not become outdated or lose its validity.
He noted that this approach was developed in line with the directives and requirements of Egypt’s petroleum sector.
ICE is now nearing completion of its work with ANRBK, he said, after previously completing the digitization work for the Assiut Oil Refining Company in full.
“These projects represent practical examples of the type of specialized services we provide,” Sobhy said.
Operations in 10 countries and plans for further expansion
The Chairman revealed that ICE currently operates in approximately 10 countries, in addition to its presence in the UAE through two companies, Oman through one company, and North America through two companies.
The group also carries out projects in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and other countries across the region and beyond.
Looking ahead, Sobhy said ICE is seeking to strengthen its presence in North America and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), while also studying opportunities to expand into Africa, particularly West Africa.
The group is currently examining the most suitable location for establishing a presence in West Africa, he said, with the objective of injecting new investments and developing additional business opportunities during the coming period.
“Egypt has witnessed an unprecedented transformation”
Commenting on Egypt’s development over recent years, Sobhy said that it would be difficult for anyone to deny the unprecedented transformation the country has experienced during President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s tenure.
He stressed that the transformation has extended across numerous sectors, particularly energy and electricity.
The country has implemented major power projects and stations, including projects in Beni Suef, West Cairo, Port Said, El-Mahmoudia and Kafr El-Dawwar, among others, he noted.
He also highlighted the significant development of Egypt’s road network, which has contributed to facilitating business activities, transportation and logistics.
“Because of the nature of my work, I travel extensively,” Sobhy said, noting that Egypt’s road network has become significantly more developed and efficient, making travel between Cairo, Aswan, Alexandria and other regions much easier.
He added that, based on his experience living and working in Canada, he is able to compare the development of Egypt’s infrastructure with international standards.
According to Sobhy, the transformation has not been limited to roads and energy, but has also extended to agriculture, industry and the facilitation of business procedures.
He pointed to the expansion of digital services and electronic systems that have simplified many procedures for both businesses and citizens, including licensing, renewal procedures, powers of attorney, real estate registration and documentation.
More than 25 years in Egypt
Sobhy confirmed that ICE has maintained a presence in Egypt for more than 25 years, specifically since January 2001.
Although the group’s headquarters is located in Canada, he stressed that Egypt remains a key foundation for the group’s activities.
The company specializes in providing consulting services related to asset integrity and sustainability, with the objective of preserving assets, extending their service life and generating greater economic value from them.
He added that ICE currently works with various entities and stakeholders in Egypt.
Ensuring asset integrity throughout the life cycle
Sobhy explained that every industrial facility is constructed for a specific purpose and according to a predetermined design life.
The life cycle of a facility, he said, can broadly be divided into three main stages, beginning with design and construction. Once the project is handed over to the operating entity, two parallel priorities emerge: technical sustainability and operational integrity.
The operating entity must first ensure that the design has been properly executed and complies with applicable international standards and specifications.
This includes reviewing the work of the engineers responsible for the original design to ensure that the facility can achieve its intended service life and avoid unexpected failures resulting from natural loads or other risks.
Once the project is handed over for operation and maintenance, the owner must ensure that inspection, maintenance and operating programs are appropriate for the nature of the facility and the risks it may face.
Managing risks beyond corrosion
Sobhy stressed that risks are not limited to internal or external corrosion.
They can also include natural disasters and other external threats, such as excavation activities carried out near oil and gas pipelines.
He explained that ICE provides consulting services to certain countries regarding their entire gas networks, assessing the various risks that could threaten them.
One such risk is third-party interference, particularly excavation near pipelines, which has caused serious incidents in several countries.
Such risks become even more significant when populations and construction activities are located close to gas pipelines, he noted.
ICE works on developing mechanisms capable of detecting excavation activities and alerting operators to unauthorized activities or work taking place near gas pipelines.
Process safety versus occupational safety
Sobhy emphasized that safety systems are applied across all facilities operated by the group’s clients, while distinguishing between occupational safety and process safety.
“Process safety represents the more critical aspect because it is directly related to major accidents,” he explained, citing incidents such as refinery explosions and major industrial accidents.
He said ICE specializes in process safety and that selecting and training engineers in this field goes through several stages: awareness, knowledge, competence and ultimately mastery.
A newly graduated engineer first needs to develop awareness through specialized training programs, after which he or she moves into the knowledge stage, where the engineer gains a deeper understanding of the science and becomes capable of reviewing technical documentation.
The next stage is competence and practical skill, followed eventually by mastery, when the engineer reaches the level of an expert and mentor.
Sobhy explained that the time required to progress through these stages varies depending on the specialization and its complexity.
The awareness stage may take two to three years, while the knowledge stage may require another two, three or even five years.
Developing practical competence can take between eight and 12 years, depending on the engineer’s capabilities and the complexity of the field.
The mastery stage may begin after approximately 12 years and can extend to 20 years or more in highly complex engineering disciplines.
Supporting Egypt and transferring technology
Sobhy acknowledged that ICE has competitors in the Egyptian market, but emphasized that the group differentiates itself through its specialization, resources and accumulated experience.
He expressed his ambition for the group to continue serving Egypt and contributing to the country’s development.
He also praised the support received from senior officials at the Ministry of Petroleum and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, describing this support as an important factor for companies investing and operating in Egypt.
Although the group’s headquarters are located in Canada, Sobhy stressed that ICE takes great pride in its deep-rooted investments and strong presence in Egypt.
“We are proud of our presence in Egypt as Egyptians first and foremost,” he said, emphasizing that the group’s objective is to contribute to the country’s development while transferring and localizing advanced technologies.
Expansion, investment and developing young talent
Sobhy revealed that ICE is planning significant expansion during the coming period.
He explained that every expansion undertaken by the group ultimately contributes to the preservation and efficiency of national assets.
He expressed his hope that the company would increase its volume of business in Egypt and expand its investments and recruitment activities in the coming period.
Asked whether he was satisfied with what the company has achieved so far, Sobhy said he was extremely satisfied, but stressed that he continues to aspire to more.
The group’s objective, he said, is not simply to expand its business, but also to recruit more young people, train them, educate them and make use of their capabilities.
ICE provides continuous training for its engineers and employees and also receives university students for practical training, he explained.
Education and professional development
Sobhy’s own educational journey includes a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, followed by a Master’s degree in Materials from the American University.
He also completed studies in safety at the University of Amsterdam and management studies at a university in Washington, D.C., where he obtained an Executive Master of Business Administration.
The executive program lasted approximately one and a half years, he noted.
A message to ICE employees
Concluding his remarks, Sobhy expressed his appreciation to all ICE employees for their performance and for the effort, dedication and hard work they put into their responsibilities.
He stressed that the nature of the group’s business requires employees to keep pace with the latest technological developments, placing a continuous responsibility on them to learn and develop their skills.
“Learning never ends,” he emphasized, noting that no matter how much a person learns, there is always more knowledge to acquire.
He likened knowledge to mountains: every time a person climbs one mountain, another, higher mountain appears ahead.
“Therefore, the journey of science, learning and knowledge never stops.”
